Wallabies thump English - an eyewitness review

There is only one test match I've been to that felt better than that, and it was the 1991 World Cup final. What a game. What a vindication.

In world sport there can't have been many who have carried the stigma that Al Baxter and the rest of the Aussie forward pack has carried for the past three plus years. We've all been guilty of heaping it on him and, and none more guilty than the Pommy press. This week it's been at fever pitch.

What a way to answer it. Front row shenanigans can be confusing, but watching the game first hand and listening to the ref by radio, it was very fucking clear what happened today. The Aussie scrum not only matched the self vaunted Pommie eight, it smashed it.

There were two tight head scrums today, both won by the men in gold. The second, in which Australia... [Read More]

Cross & Mortlock Reunite for Cook Cup Test
12-11-08, 6:18 - by travelling_gerry
Drew Mitchell and Ryan Cross return to the backline, with Mitchell to start at left wing and Cross named in the number 13 jersey alongside captain Stirling Mortlock in the midfield.

Richard Brown has retained his place in the starting lineup at Number 8, after being the only Emirates Western Force player to start against the Azzurri last Saturday.

Nathan Sharpe returns to partner Mark Chisholm at lock, while rookie tourists James O’Connor and David Pocock have missed out on selection.

The Wallabies have managed just one win from their past four visits to Twickenham and will be out to avenge their defeat to England at the quarter finals stage of the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.

Ryan Cross and tour skipper Stirling Mortlock have been reunited in the midfield as part... [Read More]

Haylett-Petty, Daruda and Brock bound for Dubai!
10-11-08, 13:30 - by Coach
Teenage Emirates Western Force fullback Dane Haylett-Petty and inside back Scott Daruda have won selection in the Australian Sevens squad for the 2008/2009 IRB Sevens World Series.

I have it on good authority that we have a Western Australian born and bred lad in the squad also - 2007 Force Academy and Perth Spirit Player,Will Brock.

The promising trio has been included in an 18-man squad for the eight tournaments of the series, which will be played around the globe between 28 November 2008 and 31 May 2009.

The Australian squad will also compete at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in March.

A product of Perth’s Hale School, Durban-born Haylett-Petty made three Super 14 appearances for the Emirates Western Force in 2008 after making his debut against the Chiefs in Perth.

Wallabies fall short at Bledisloe 4
02-11-08, 8:21 - by Coach
An historical 4th Bledisloe cup match (a 4 match Bledisloe series has happened only once before in 1962) played at a neutral venue for the first time ever has confirmned the Kiwis as the Bledisloe Cup holders for the 6th year in a row.

The Wallabies started strong with 2 tries by Drew Mitchell with Giteau slotting the conversions with little apparent effort. However, with full arms back in play the Wallabies conceded a raft of first half penalties with Carter's first 3 shots at goal hitting the mark giving Australia only a narrow lead of 14-9 going into the break.

After the break it was the kiwis who turned it on with unconverted tries to Sivivatu and McCaw (from an improbable Sivivatu pass). Final score: Australia 14, New Zealand 19.

As it happened (with thanks to our Hong Kong correspondant,... [Read More]
